Edge Prep
& Post Treatment for High Performance Tools
Automated micro-honing and drag finishing systems designed to stabilize edges, control surface condition, and create repeatable foundations for PVD and DLC coatings.
Why Edge Prep?
Chipping, inconsistent radii, and manual preparation introduce more variability than the deposition process itself.
Apex offers two complementary approaches — Edge Pro JET PL-24 micro-honing and drag finishing/polishing — so manufacturers can control geometry and surface behavior before parts ever enter a coating chamber.
Edge Pro JET PL-24 — automated, controlled edge formation
Best for: defined radii, repeatable geometry, cutting tools, precision features.
Drag Finishing — surface refinement & polishing
Best for: surface smoothing, burr removal, aesthetic and functional finishes.
Either path, Apex can help you create a predictable path from grinding → coating → performance.
Automated Micro-Honing with
Process Control
The Edge Pro JET PL-24 replaces manual edge treatment with a programmable process. Instead of relying on operator feel, the system delivers precise, repeatable micro-honing cycles that produce uniform radii across entire batches.
Toolmakers use this when they need:
- Defined edge radii rather than random rounding
- Identical preparation across shifts
- Short cycle times aligned to coating batches
- Full traceability of process parameters
The machine automates the micro-honing process with remarkable accuracy so every tool or component is prepared to the same standard. Effectively eliminating inconsisent edges, premature coating failure, variable tool performance and reduced human handling.
Core Strengths:
- Unmatched precision
- Accelerated output and rapid cycles meet tight deadlines
- Reduced labor needs due to the fully automated process
- Seamless operation and intuitive controls
- Small footprint making for easy integration
Drag Finish Equipment
Surface Refinement Beyond
Geometry
Improve the performance of your cutting tools through tribofinition
In practice, drag finishing is most valuable where surface roughness, residual grinding marks, or minor burrs can negatively influence friction, wear behavior, or coating performance. By gently and uniformly exposing parts to controlled abrasive media, the process smooths surfaces, blends transitions, and removes microscopic defects that are difficult to eliminate through grinding or honing alone.
Drag finishing solves:
- Elevated friction caused by rough or directional surface textures
- Inconsistent Ra values across batches
- Burrs and sharp transitions that affect fit or motion
- Variability introduced by manual polishing
- Reduced coating performance due to poor surface preparation
